Roglic wins the Grand Colombier and wins the Tour de l’Ain 2020
9 August 2020

The last stage of the Tour de l’Ain only confirmed the superiority of the Jumbo-Visma team throughout the three days of the race. Primoz Roglic has solidified his status as one of the main favourites of the upcoming Tour de France. The Slovenian of the Jumbo-Visma team, who had already won the second stage on Saturday, repeated the feat on Sunday with a masterful demonstration to cross the finish line as winner at the top of the Col du Grand Colombier. He finished ahead of Egan Bernal and Nairo Quintana, sending a strong message three weeks before the start of the Grande Boucle.

The stage, with its triptych — ascent of the Selle de Fromentel, Col de la Biche and Grand Colombier, an almost identical copy of the 15th stage of the Tour de France — took place in blazing heat. It was the Ineos team of Colombian rider Egan Bernal, second in the general standings, who for a long time dictated the pace of the day’s race, the gap with the Dutch team was too great today. While we could have expected attacks quite early on, especially from the Col de la Biche, the peloton set a hard pace right from the start. Under these conditions, the breakaway of the day (eleven men at the front), could never catch a breather and broke up at the top of the climb of the Selle de Fromentel, the first difficulty of the day.

Andrea Bagioli (Deceuninck), young Italian hopeful and winner of the first stage, and Julien Bernard (Trek Segafredo), wearing the polka dot jersey, are the last two survivors. What came next? A mano a mano between the men from Ineos and Jumbo-Visma teams to take the leaders to Grand Colombier.

In this final, 17.7 km climb to the finish, Bernal seemed to mark time and time again in the face of the immense work of the men in yellow (they were still four at 7 km from the summit). A bluff, since the last winner of the Tour de France still managed to place an attack shortly after the red flame. A wary Roglic didn’t fall for the trap and at first followed the attack before placing a fatal counter-attack.

Second in the first stage and already winner yesterday, Primoz Roglic doubled the feat with another stage victory and above all the overall win in the 2020 Tour de l’Ain. A logical and well deserved success for the man who now stands out as one of the great favourites in the Tour de France, especially if he finds himself as well surrounded as he was on the roads of Ain.

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Vismo) dominated the event right to the end, winning on Sunday at the top of the Col du Grand Colombier on the third and final stage to confirm his first place in the overall standings. The Slovenian edged out Colombians Egan Bernal (Ineos) and Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic).
